Let’s Talk About Weight

Hello everyone! I hope 2017 is going great thus far! Today I want to talk about something that not only affects me everyday, but affects a lot of others as well. Let’s Talk About Weight.

Weight is something that everyone deals with. Some people have a hard time gaining it, some have a hard time losing it, and for some it’s not an issue at all. In some way, shape, or form, we all deal with weight.

Allow me to narrow this down, slightly. Let’s talk about people who think it’s okay to talk badly about someone who is over weight. In school, we call it bullying. When you’re an adult, you basically get told to ignore it. Some can, some can’t.

In the last couple of days, I’ve been told by people who I work with that things have been said about me in my absence. For those who don’t know, towards the end of November, I began experiencing a lot of pain in my lower back. I found out that my SI joint was out. I’ve been getting treated for it since, and had to take some time off of work.

However, there are apparently some that I work with who don’t believe I have a back problem. They think I have a weight problem, which I do. But they are going so far as to basically say, that my back problem isn’t valid because I’m over weight.

Excuse me? What kind of stupid thinking is that?

Let me tell you this…I’m overweight. I know this. I’m aware. I’ve accepted it and have been working on trying to change it, and it is not easy. Me being overweight, however, does not give anyone the right to say that my pain is not valid because of my weight.

Would you say that to someone who is skinny or fit? No, you most certainly wouldn’t. If a skinny or fit person said to you “I have bad back pain,” you’d be concerned and try to help them.

Why should that be any different with an overweight person? Yes, they may have a weight problem, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a back problem. Help them, too!

I’ve been experiencing this my entire life. When I was about 11-12, I started getting headaches. Pretty bad headaches. I went to my doctor, and she told me that if I lost weight I’d feel better. She didn’t even try to look at reasons why my head hurt, no. She just focused on my weight. I have since changed doctors.

People, there is a time and a place to talk about weight. If someone is near death because of a weight issue, by all means, please talk to them about it. You could save a life. BUT, if a person comes to you and says they have a problem with their back, or legs, or whatever, don’t just tell them to lose weight to feel better. Help them just like you would anyone else.

Thank you guys for reading this. This was personal to me, I know I ranted a little, but I couldn’t help it.
